About Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher Photography Tour

The Indian Subcontinent is home to 12 species of kingfisher. Among these 12 gems, the Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher is the smallest. With a size of just 14 cm (about 5.51 in), the Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher is famously known as “ODK” among bird watchers. Being a small forest kingfisher, it is also called the “Jewel of the Forest” due to its elegant colorful feathers, such as magenta pink, neon blue, red, yellow, purple, and white.This beautiful kingfisher is a resident bird in the southern range of the Western Ghats, Sri Lanka, and the Northeast, and it is a breeding visitor to the northern range of the Western Ghats. It prefers small forest streams at the foothills of the forest edge for its nesting site, where it constructs its nest on the banks of forest streams using mud mounts.

ODK feeds on many species of small vertebrates, including forest skinks, geckos, lizards, crabs, tadpoles, and insects. Our photography campsite is located in the foothills of the Western Ghats near Chiplun and Guhagar in the Northern Range of the Konkan belt. Our on-field experts will ensure that you have ample opportunities to capture the beauty of ODK with your cameras during the 2 photography sessions specially dedicated to it. Accommodation is provided in a cozy hotel located close to the birding site, equipped with good basic amenities such as clean washrooms, charging points, and comfortable bedding. During this tour, we will be serving simple Konkani-style vegetarian food cooked with love by locals. Apart from the ODK, the photography site is also home to other birds like the Blue-eared Kingfisher, Hornbills, Blackbirds, India Pitta, Crested Hawk Eagle, Spider-hunters, and Sunbirds.
