About Bhadra Wildlife Reserve
The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary derives its name from the Bhadra River, which serves as its lifeline. Initially known as Muthodi Wildlife Sanctuary after the neighbouring village, it was later designated as a Project Tiger reserve. While renowned for its tiger population, the sanctuary offers exceptional opportunities to observe a diverse range of mammals, reptiles, and over 250 bird species, many of which are indigenous to the Western Ghats. Muthodi, located in this scenic forest patch, forms the southern section of the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. Notably, the sanctuary is also home to the Jagara Giant, an impressive teak tree with a circumference of 5.1 meters and a towering height of 32 meters. This majestic tree, estimated to be around 400 years old, is a remarkable sight to behold. Spanning approximately 500 square kilometers, the Bhadra Tiger Reserve extends across the Shivamogga and Chikmagalur districts, encompassing a captivating landscape that attracts nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike.
What makes Bhadra Tiger Reserve truly unique during the summer months is the rare opportunity to witness and photograph the spectacular River Tern colonies that nest on the islands of the Bhadra Reservoir. This breathtaking phenomenon transforms the tranquil backwaters into a vibrant hub of avian activity, offering photographers and nature enthusiasts a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It’s an exclusive wildlife spectacle that you won’t find in any other national park in India — making a summer visit to Bhadra an unmissable treat for every nature lover.
