Flora of Rann of Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary

You’d expect a desert to be less exciting and mundane, but Rann of Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary is going to surprise you. From the rare panoramic views to the shrubbery, everything here is worth seeing at least once in your life. The sanctuary sees a lot of seawater, thus its salty marshes, however, such habitat is perfect for the wildlife thriving here. The sanctuary boasts irregular grassland called baits which is the major vegetation in the area. The ground is surprisingly blanketed with trees, grass and prairie that colour the forest emerald. Especially after the monsoon season, the grassland all but comes alive with tall grasses, rich green hues, plants, singing birds and resident animals lazing around.

Fauna of Rann of Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary

The desert is home to quite a few species of mammals that have adapted to the salty marshes and wetlands of the area. Large herbivores like Indian Wild Ass, chinkara and even the threatened species of nilgai and Blackbuck can be found here. Once, the Indian Wild Ass was dotted thought-out the forests in the country but now this species is mostly confined to the Rann of Kutch.

The best and least expected surprise of this vacation destination is the splendid list of birds found in the area. One can hardly picture birds flying in a desert, however, this green Wildlife Sanctuary amidst a desert has almost 200 species of titillating bird species, even some of the threatened species of lesser florican and houbara bustard.

Explore The Known and Unknown of Rann of Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary

Camel Safari Timings:

5:00 pm – 7:00 pm (daily)

Camel rides in the Mudflats of the Little Rann of Kutch. The tour guide will be accompanying the tourists.

How to reach Rann of Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary

The Great and Little Rann of Kutch are separated geographically and you can plan your visit to reach either one or both of them separately. They are both well connected to surrounding cities and transport is an easy affair.

Little Rann of Kutch: Ahmedabad Airport is at a distance of 110 km from Little Rann of Kutch and is well connected to all major Indian and international cities. The nearest railway station is Viramgam, at a distance of 45 km from here. If you want to make a road trip to Rann of Kutch then from Bhuj the distance is 268 km and 175 km from Rajkot.

Greater Rann of Kutch: Ahmedabad is 335 kilometres from Bhuj. Greater Rann of Kutch is about 85 kilometres from Bhuj.

Bhuj is the closest air and rail node to Rann of Kutch, at 85 kilometres. The Rudra Mata airport at Bhuj is a small but busy node that connects Mumbai to Bhuj. You can take a bus or car ride to Bhuj also. Once you’ve reached Bhuj, you can hail a cab or taxi to reach your destination.
