Nestled within the lush greenery of Karnala Bird Sanctuary, just a 1.5-hour drive from Mumbai, this monsoon haven comes alive between June and August with the arrival of the Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher. This tiny, vibrant bird returns each year to nest in the rain-drenched forest trails and quiet stream banks. Monsoon is the most magical time, as sightings of this elusive “Jewel of the Western Ghats” peak—offering birders and photographers an unforgettable experience in nature’s lap.

Itinerary in Short:

  1. Arrive at the given venue 5-10 minutes before the given timing. (2pm)
  2. 5 minutes drive to the parking area.
  3. Later 5-10 minute walk to the hide. Enjoy the hide session for 4-4.5 hours
  4. The event ends with memorable sightings

  1. What are the timings of the photography sessions?
    There are two photography slots available each day:
  • Morning Slot: 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM
  • Afternoon Slot: 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM
  1. How many participants are allowed per slot?
    Each slot is limited to 10 participants only to ensure a peaceful and focused photography experience.
  2. Is transportation provided?
    Participants are required to reach the location on their own. Exact Google Maps location will be shared on the WhatsApp group two days prior to the tour.
  3. Will there be a group for coordination?
    Yes, a dedicated WhatsApp group will be created two days before the tour for easy communication, location sharing, and updates.
  4. Is there parking available?
    Yes, open parking is available at the location. However, please note that parking is at your own risk.
  5. Is there any walking involved?
    Yes, there is a 5–10 minute walk through forest trails to reach the photography hide. The path is usually wet and muddy during monsoon.
  6. What kind of footwear is recommended?
    We recommend wearing Crocs or sandals with a good grip, as the trail may be slippery and muddy.
  7. Will food and water be provided?
    Yes, breakfast and mineral water will be provided. The breakfast menu typically includes Poha or Upma with muffins.
  8. Is a tripod necessary?
    Yes, a tripod is mandatory for this shoot to ensure image stability and minimal disturbance to the bird.
  9. What should I carry for the tour?
  • A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a telephoto lens
  • Tripod (compulsory)
  • Rain protection for yourself and your gear
  • Comfortable outdoor clothing
  • Personal medications, if needed

    The ODKF is typically active even in light rain.
  2. Is this tour beginner-friendly?
    Absolutely! Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just starting out in bird photography, this tour offers a great opportunity to capture one of India’s most colorful birds with expert guidance available if needed.
  3. Does the tour cost cover both slots in a day?
    No, the cost of the tour is applicable for one slot only (either Morning or Afternoon). If you’d like to attend both slots, it will be considered as two separate bookings.
